If you’ve taken a flight recently you may have noticed the abundance of ‘no smoking’ notices. If you (like me) completely glazed over the irony of actual ash trays adorned with said paraphernalia.

After thinking about it, I quickly justified the presence by recognizing the fact that it’s likely not cost effective to remove the ash tray in every plane. Perhaps you’re thinking the same thing, but we’re both wrong. This article explains the real reason behind all of the hullaballoo and in reality it’s a very wise decision. We can extrapolate that wisdom and incorporate it into our designs as well.
